Uses

What a retaining wall can do

  • Hold back a slope

Stop soil creeping onto the lawn, the drive or the patio below it.

  • Level out part of the yard

Turn a slope into flat ground for a patio, a play area or more lawn.

  • Raise a planting bed

A low block wall gives shrubs and perennials a clean, raised edge.

  • Add steps through it

Steps can be built into the wall so the slope is easy to walk.

Materials

What goes into a block wall

  • Close-up of tan and grey split-face concrete wall block

    Wall block

Split-face concrete block that locks course to course. It comes in several colors and face textures.

  • Grey drainage stone behind a block wall under construction

    Drainage stone

Clean, washed gravel behind the block lets water drain out instead of pushing on the wall.

  • Concrete cap stones along the top of a block wall

    Caps

A finished top course that covers the block and gives the wall a clean edge.

How it goes

How a wall goes in

  1. Free quote

Request a quote online, or call or text (502) 915-1364. Tell us how long and tall the wall might be.

  2. Lay out and dig

The wall line is marked out and a trench is dug for the base.

  3. Base and first course

Gravel goes into the trench and is compacted, and the first course of block is set level on it.

  4. Build, drain and backfill

Courses go up with drainage stone behind them, and soil is backfilled as the wall rises.

  5. Cap and clean up

Caps finish the top of the wall, and the work area is cleaned up.

  6. After the build

Keep downspouts pointed away from the wall, and give new planting along it time to settle in.

Before you call

Worth thinking about first

None of this has to be decided up front. It just makes the first conversation quicker.

  • Length and height

Roughly how long and how tall the wall needs to be. A tape-measure guess is fine.

  • What it holds back

A slope, level ground for a patio, or soil for a raised bed.

  • Where water goes

Downspouts, wet spots, and where rain runs after a storm.

  • Block color

Whether it should match the house, a patio or stone you already have.

  • Steps or curves

Whether you need steps through it, or a curve instead of a straight run.

  • Planting along it

Shrubs, perennials or mulch along the top or at the base.

How much does a retaining wall cost?

It depends on the length, the height and what the wall is holding back, so each wall is quoted on its own. Quotes are free.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

Taller walls can need a permit in Louisville Metro. Ask when you request a quote, and we'll talk through whether yours might.

What makes a retaining wall fail?

Usually water. When it builds up behind a wall, it pushes the wall out of line, which is why drainage stone goes behind the block.

Can you add steps or planting?

Yes. Outdoor steps and landscape installation are both services we offer, so steps, beds and shrubs can be planned with the wall.

Do you build walls in my area?

We work in Pleasure Ridge Park, Valley Station, Fairdale and Valley Village. If you're nearby, call or text (502) 915-1364 and ask.
